Well, I never said James was a hero. I think he was probably one of those stupid popular teenagers who don't think about what they're doing. But really it was Sirius who tried to kill Snape, not James. I'm not saying Snape is a complete piece of crap, he does, afterall, work for the good guys, but he's pretty immature.
What about when he refereed the quiddich match for Gryphindor against Hufflepuff and kept giving Gryphindor penalties for no reason. THAT and he obviously favours his own house. That's just not a very stand up way to act.
Mostly I think he started out on the death eaters side because he was shunned by the marauders and was looking for a place to belong. Luckily he saw the error of his ways.

But he made fun of Hermione, and that makes him a bastard.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">True Sirius was the one who set it up, but James let it go on until it was almost too late. He knew what was going to happen; he could have stopped it before it even got started. Not saying him being a weak-minded follower makes him "bad", but it isn't like he had clean hands in the matter.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think (perhaps) you don't give enough weight to the fact he has to keep up a certain level of appearances for the Death Eaters/bad guys. Everything he does at that school gets back to the Death Eaters via their children. He has to be over the top/ruthless to cement that "rep" - especially given that he could be/is on shaky ground given his renouncement of the Death Eaters at trial. He has to convince them he is still on their side. How else to demonstrate that, and on a daily basis, than by slamming the House (and all in it) of the person who brought down "your" Lord? He really has no room to pick and choose when to "be nice" in that regard. It's an all or nothing approach with the Death Eaters, and he has to sell that image 24/7 because he always has someone watching him who can/will report back on his actions.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">She's one of Harry's best friends. Naturally she will get more of a dose than the "average" student. As does Ron (also because of his family/father's position in the Ministry).

And come on now.... can you honestly say she never got on your last nerve? She was a pretty pushy/snobby little thing in the first two books (#1 in particular).

I support the whole "playing the part because he is a great spy" theory whole heartedly. I know he has to pretend that he despises Harry even though he has protected him on more then one occasion. Really, Snape could be considered a good guy, except for one thing. He enjoys it! You can tell from everything he says, that he LOVES embarrassing Harry every chance he gets. He gets a natural smile on his lips everytime Harry is uncomfortable, in trouble, or anything but happy. Snape LOVES the position he's in. To quote Kids in the Hall, he's drunk with his moderate sense of power! He knows that he plays an increadibly valuable part in this war, and I think he thinks he plays a more important part then Harry. Really, when it all comes down to it, I would agree with you completely, except Snape is holding an unhealthy grudge against children and I think that's very un-adult like. I mean, he was proud of himself when he mocked Hermione like that, and when he makes Harry mad in his classes, he LOVES it! I just think that's increadibly uncool and bastard-like. And I don't think Snape was with Dumbledore from the beginning because he called Lily a mudblood in his worst memory. I think at some point he got scared and came back to the good team.

And Hermione always cracked me up in the first book. She's too smart for her own good. Which I think will eventually lead to her demise, but that's something entirely different.

Morning folk! I had an impromptu day off yesterday, which I enjoyed a bunch. Paps and I watched A Series of Unfortunate Events. It wasn't bad. It was no Harry Potter, but it wasn't bad.
Speaking of which, 31 days, 13 hours, 22 minutes and 11 seconds until the sixth Harry Potter book comes out.

Hey Pappette!

Yup, it's gonna be fun watching my family (me included) fighting over who gets to read the book first. We'll probably end up with 4 separate book markers stuck in it.
